Tennessee court holds hearing on Christa Pike’s death penalty challenge

A Knox County court is conducting a multi-day evidentiary hearing to determine the constitutionality of Tennessee’s lethal injection protocol regarding the scheduled execution of Christa Pike. Pike, the only woman on the state’s death row, is set to be executed on September 30.

Senior Judge W. Mark Ward, acting as a special master appointed by the Tennessee Supreme Court, is examining several issues raised by the defense. Pike’s attorneys argue that the state is unequipped to carry out the execution without violating the U.S. and Tennessee Constitutions, citing her unique physical, medical, and psychological conditions.

A central component of the challenge involves the use of an all-male execution team. Defense counsel argues that given Pike’s documented history of childhood sexual violence and her PTSD diagnosis, the presence of an all-male team would cause severe psychological harm and force her to relive past traumas.
