Tennessee football secondary and offense show growth
The Tennessee Volunteers' defensive secondary has seen significant improvement compared to last season. After allowing 244.8 passing yards per game last year, the unit has limited opponents to 159.3 yards per game through seven contests this season. This defensive progress is supported by a pass rush that leads the nation with 30 sacks, as well as improved tackling and play from transfers Kayin Lee and Dejuan Lane, who have combined for five interceptions.
Offensively, wide receiver Mike Matthews is expected to play a key role in the upcoming matchup against South Carolina. Matthews leads the team with three receiving touchdowns and 481 receiving yards. His ability to exploit South Carolina’s passing defense, which ranks 107th nationally, will be critical, provided the offensive line can protect quarterback George MacIntyre against a Gamecocks defense that averages 2.67 sacks per game.
