Tennessee to execute Christa Pike, first woman in 200 years FAST-MOVING

Christa Pike, 50, is scheduled for execution by lethal injection in Tennessee on Wednesday, September 30. If carried out, she will be the first woman executed in the state in over 200 years.

Pike was convicted in 1996 for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, a fellow student at Knoxville Job Corps. The crime involved torture and was motivated by jealousy. Pike's former boyfriend, Tadaryl Shipp, received a life sentence for his involvement, while another accomplice received probation.

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee recently denied Pike's request for clemency, stating he would not intervene in the sentence. Pike's defense team has appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court to stay the execution, arguing that her childhood history of severe physical and sexual abuse, as well as subsequent diagnoses of bipolar disorder and PTSD, were not adequately considered during her original trial.

Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International and UN experts, have called for a halt to the execution. Pike has expressed that she is “at peace” with the outcome but remains nervous about the execution process itself.
