Tennessee primary shapes open governor race and redrawn congressional districts

Early voting began on Monday for Tennessee's August 6 primary, the first open‑seat gubernatorial contest in the state in nearly a decade. The Republican primary features U.S. Sen. Marsha Blackburn and U.S. Rep. John Rose as leading contenders, while Governor Bill Lee has not yet endorsed a candidate. The Democratic field includes Jerri Green, Carnita Atwater and others focused on healthcare, education and economic inequality, but faces steep odds in a solidly Republican state.

The primary also includes contests in newly redrawn congressional districts after the state legislature approved a map that split the 9th District into three parts. Republican Brent Taylor, Charlotte Bergmann, Jeremy Thompson and Todd Warner are running for the open 9th‑District seat, while Democrat London Lamar, Justin Pearson and others seek the Democratic nomination. Other districts see incumbents such as Rep. David Kustoff (R‑8th) running unopposed, and Rep. Andy Ogles (R‑5th) facing a challenger. Early voting runs through July 17.
