Christa Pike regains consciousness after failed Tennessee execution

Christa Pike, a 50-year-old death row inmate in Tennessee, has regained consciousness and is able to speak after surviving a failed execution attempt on September 30. Pike, convicted for the 1995 murder of Colleen Slemmer, was administered two doses of pentobarbital, but the procedure failed to kill her.

Pike is currently receiving intensive medical care in a Nashville hospital. Her lawyers report that she has been removed from a ventilator but remains handcuffed and shackled to her hospital bed. They noted she sustained severe injuries to her arms, including burns and blisters, which they suggest may have resulted from improper intravenous line placement.

Following the incident, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee ordered an independent third-party investigation into the execution attempt and suspended all other scheduled executions for the remainder of 2026. Additionally, Frank Strada, the commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Correction, has resigned. Pike's legal team is seeking a court order to preserve all evidence from the attempt, including drug lot numbers and execution logs, and is requesting that her sentence be commuted to life without parole.
