Tennessee safety Edrees Farooq out for 2026 season with knee injury

Tennessee starting safety Edrees Farooq will miss the entire 2026 season after suffering a torn patellar tendon in his right knee. The injury occurred during a Friday morning practice, during which Farooq was transported to UT Medical via ambulance.

Farooq, a junior, was a key component of the Volunteers' defensive secondary. During his sophomore season in 2025, he started all 13 games, recording 76 tackles, two interceptions, and four forced fumbles, which ranked second in the SEC.

Head coach Josh Heupel expressed disappointment regarding the injury, noting that Farooq and teammate Jaedon Harmon, who also suffered a torn ACL, were both highly invested in their professional development. New defensive coordinator Jim Knowles had previously praised Farooq for his ability to master the new defensive scheme and establish himself as a top safety during spring practice.
