Tennessee Tech University Tops $50 Million in External Research Funding

Tennessee Tech University announced that it secured $50.88 million in externally funded research for fiscal year 2026, marking the sixth consecutive year the institution set a new funding record. The total supports 177 projects across all eight academic colleges and schools.

University officials highlighted the impact on student learning and the university’s growing reputation. Vice President for Research and Economic Development John Liu said the funding creates hands‑on, experiential opportunities for students, while Associate Vice President Michael Aikens called the achievement evidence of Tennessee Tech’s status as a destination for high‑impact research, innovation and workforce development. In May, the university launched GENESIS, a high‑performance computing system commissioned by the ASCEND Center to accelerate large‑scale artificial‑intelligence and scientific computing. Earlier in the summer, Tennessee Tech also joined the Universities Space Research Association, strengthening its ties to aerospace research.
