Tennessee universities report record student enrollment growth

Universities in Tennessee are reporting significant growth in student enrollment. The University of Tennessee has reached a record population of over 41,000 students following more than 74,000 applications in 2026.

This surge has led to logistical challenges on the UT campus, including increased traffic, parking difficulties, and unpredictable bus commutes. Students have also reported difficulties with course availability, noting that high demand has resulted in being waitlisted for required classes needed for graduation.

Separately, Tennessee Tech University has reached its highest enrollment since 2015, with approximately 10,773 students. The university reported significant growth in the College of Engineering, nursing, and business. This increase is attributed to new programs designed to meet workforce needs, such as a bachelor’s degree in artificial intelligence and a new architecture program.
