TenneT expands Dutch high-voltage electricity grid infrastructure

TenneT and the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs are undertaking significant upgrades to the national high-voltage electricity grid to accommodate increasing demand from the energy transition, electric transport, and heat pumps.

In the Rotterdam harbor region, three large transformers are being transported from Spijkenisse to the Simonshaven high-voltage station in Geervliet. This expansion of the 380 kV station is designed to strengthen the electricity supply to the Botlek area, serving as a critical link between the Maasvlakte and Crayestein stations. The transport required temporary road closures to facilitate the movement of the heavy equipment.

Simultaneously, work is being conducted on the high-voltage connection between Krimpen aan den IJssel and Diemen. This project includes upgrading existing infrastructure in polder areas and significantly expanding the Breukelen-Kortrijk distribution station, which is expected to grow to approximately three times its current size. These improvements aim to increase transport capacity and ensure the regional grid can support growing electricity consumption.
