TenneT expands logistics and grid capacity to combat Dutch energy congestion

Grid operator TenneT is implementing new logistics strategies to combat electricity demand and grid congestion in the Netherlands. To address extreme lead times for high-voltage transformers, the company will begin constructing a 27,000 m² warehouse in Apeldoorn in 2025. This facility will allow TenneT to maintain both dynamic and static buffer stocks of components to support its current workload of approximately 1,000 projects.

In the Rotterdam port region and the South Holland islands, TenneT and Stedin have collaborated with the Port of Rotterdam and Deltalinqs to provide temporary relief for grid congestion. By deploying a temporary transformer in Europoort at the site of a future 380,000-volt station, the partners aim to accelerate grid connections for businesses, schools, and hospitals currently on waiting lists. While permanent infrastructure expansions are not expected to be completed until at least 2032, these customized measures are intended to facilitate regional growth and sustainability efforts.
