Tennis Australia faces scrutiny over executive pay and format changes

Tennis Australia is facing scrutiny following disclosures regarding executive compensation and potential changes to match formats. US Internal Revenue Service filings reveal that former CEO Craig Tiley received US$2.5 million (approximately A$3.5 million) in his final year, a significant increase from the US$1.2 million he earned the previous year. Other high-level executives also received substantial compensation, including Chief Commercial Officer Cedric Cornelis, who earned US$812,027.

Tennis Australia has stated that these figures may not provide an accurate financial picture due to differences in reporting periods between Australia and the US, as well as currency fluctuations.

Separately, the newly appointed CEO, Andrew Abdo, has sparked debate by suggesting that Grand Slam formats, including scoring systems and match lengths, could evolve to better connect with younger audiences. In response to concerns from traditionalists, the Australian Open has confirmed that the best-of-five sets format will be maintained.
