Tennis Canada pushes ahead with $500M Jarry Park stadium plan in Montreal

Tennis Canada announced a proposal to build a new 15,000‑seat stadium with a retractable roof at Jarry Park in Montreal to host the upcoming National Bank Open. The plan follows a year‑long feasibility study that compared renovating the existing IGA Stadium with constructing a brand‑new venue, and the organization says a new stadium is needed to meet ATP and WTA standards. Funding talks are under way with municipal, provincial and federal governments, and officials have signaled strong economic and social interest in the project.

Local residents and critics have responded sharply, warning that the development would eliminate a community softball field and further commercialise park land. Some propose moving the Masters 1000 event permanently to Toronto and scaling Montreal’s tournament to a smaller ATP 250/WTA 250 while upgrading the current facility. Valérie Tétreault, director of the National Bank Open, said, "It was a very important step; we feel we are falling behind," underscoring the pressure from the tennis tours.
