Tennis players face betting-related threats and gender debates

Spanish tennis player Irene Burillo has publicly denounced the dark side of the sport, specifically the harassment linked to sports betting. Burillo reported receiving insults, threats, and abusive messages on social media following matches, particularly when results do not align with bettors' expectations. She noted that these threats can escalate to extreme levels, including death threats against her and her partner, and even mentions of being tracked in person.

In a separate controversy within the tennis circuit, Peruvian player Ignacio Buse sparked debate regarding the comparison between men's and women's tennis. Buse claimed that any male player ranked within the top 100 or 200 of the ATP would be able to defeat the number one female player, stating that women's tennis is a different sport that cannot be compared to the men's game.
