Vila Viçosa and Tentúgal host major Portuguese heritage events

Portugal recently hosted key cultural heritage events, including the closing session of the 2026 European Heritage Days in Vila Viçosa. During the session, Secretary of State for Culture Alberto Santos expressed the government’s full commitment to Vila Viçosa’s candidacy for UNESCO World Heritage status, noting that the town’s selection for the event serves as a public signal of support. Officials emphasized that preserving such heritage requires continuous maintenance and active community participation to prevent historic centers from becoming mere backdrops for tourists.

In another significant cultural event, the 15th edition of the Day of the Heritage of the Misericórdias was held in Tentúgal. The initiative, promoted by the União das Misericórdias Portuguesas (UMP), highlighted the successful restoration of the stone altarpiece in the Church of the Misericórdia of Tentúgal, an artwork by Tomé Velho. The event brought together specialists and representatives to discuss the role of religious and community heritage in driving local identity and economic development.
