Tenzing film centers on Sherpa Tenzing Norgay’s Everest ascent
The biographical drama “Tenzing,” now available on Apple TV, explores the historic 1953 ascent of Mount Everest from the perspective of Sherpa Tenzing Norgay. While Edmund Hillary has traditionally been celebrated as the primary hero of the expedition, the film aims to center Norgay’s role as an equal and essential climber.
Directed by Jennifer Peedom, the film depicts the challenges faced by the British expedition, including the discrimination and social disparities encountered by the Sherpa team. It highlights the spiritual connection Norgay held with the mountain, which he knew as Chomolungma, contrasting it with the Western view of the peak as a conquest.
Cast members Genden Phuntsok, who portrays Tenzing, and Tom Hiddleston, who plays Edmund Hillary, have noted the film’s emphasis on the deep trust and mutual reliance between the two men. This bond was critical to their survival, including a moment where Norgay saved Hillary from falling into a glacier crevasse.
