Teodora Georgieva reinstated as judge by Bulgarian Supreme Judicial Council
The Judicial College of the Supreme Judicial Council (VSS) has unanimously decided to reinstate Teodora Georgieva as a judge at the Administrative Court – Sofia-City. The decision follows the expiration of her mandate as the Bulgarian European Prosecutor on July 28, 2026.
The reinstatement is based on the Judicial Power Act, which requires officials to return to their previous positions if they receive a reprimand rather than a dismissal. Documents from the European Public Prosecutor's Office confirmed that Georgieva's disciplinary penalty was a reprimand.
The move comes amid significant controversy. The European Public Prosecutor's Office previously found Georgieva guilty of three disciplinary violations. Additionally, Chief European Prosecutor Laura Kövesi noted that Georgieva's ranking for the prosecutor role was allegedly altered following government intervention. Georgieva has also been linked to allegations of receiving monthly payments from Petyo Petrov, an individual identified as an influence broker, though she denies all accusations.
Separately, the VSS has also opened procedures to elect administrative managers for 30 different judicial bodies across Bulgaria.
