Rolando Romero defends WBA welterweight title against Teofimo Lopez

Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero is set to defend his WBA welterweight title against Teofimo Lopez on Saturday, August 22, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The event will be available via pay-per-view on DAZN and Prime Video.

Romero enters the bout following a significant upset victory over Ryan Garcia in May 2025. Lopez, a former two-division champion, is making his debut in the 147-pound welterweight division after losing his lightweight and super lightweight titles to Shakur Stevenson and George Kambosos Jr., respectively.

The matchup carries personal weight as the two fighters are longtime friends and former sparring partners. During the final press conference, tensions rose as Lopez dismissed Romero as being out of his league, while Romero mocked Lopez regarding his physical appearance. Lopez expressed a desire to prove his relevance and potentially become a three-division world champion.

The undercard features a middleweight bout between Yoenli Hernandez and Francisco Veron, alongside a super bantamweight championship fight between Victor Santillan and Gary Antonio Russell.
