TEPCO begins 24th round of Fukushima treated water discharge
Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) has commenced its 24th round of discharging ALPS treated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. This specific operation, the sixth for the 2026 fiscal year, began on October 5, 2026.
The discharge is scheduled to continue until October 23, 2026, involving approximately 7,800 cubic meters of treated water. TEPCO expects the total tritium content in this release to be about 1.2 trillion Becquerels. To ensure safety, the water is diluted with seawater to maintain tritium concentrations well below regulatory limits and international standards.
TEPCO reported that the tritium concentration after dilution is approximately 200 Becquerels per liter, significantly lower than the government's policy value of 1,500 Becquerels per liter and the WHO drinking water standard of 10,000 Becquerels per liter. The company continues to monitor seawater samples at multiple locations near the plant to ensure levels remain below investigation thresholds. The ongoing discharge process is conducted under international monitoring to support the long-term decommissioning of the site.
