Tepco begins Fukushima No. 2 reactor spent fuel removal

Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings (Tepco) has begun removing high-level radioactive spent nuclear fuel from the No. 2 reactor pool at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. This process involves using remote-controlled cranes to place fuel assemblies into casks, which are then transferred to a common storage pool. Tepco aims to complete the removal of the 587 spent fuel assemblies from this reactor by the end of fiscal 2028.

Separately, Tepco announced the completion of the 22nd round of treated wastewater discharge at the facility. This round, which ran from July 30 to August 17, involved the release of approximately 7,888 tons of water containing about 1.3 trillion Becquerels of tritium. To date, approximately 173,000 tons of treated water have been discharged since the process began in August 2023.
