Teralba selected for new NSW train manufacturing plant

The New South Wales government has selected a former coal mine site at Teralba as the preferred location for a new state-owned train manufacturing plant. The facility will be part of the Future Fleet Program, aimed at building the next generation of passenger trains for the state's network.

The Teralba site was chosen over the existing government-owned Broadmeadow site due to its larger size and greater flexibility. The location is expected to accommodate manufacturing, assembly, commissioning, and on-site dynamic testing, while allowing for future expansion. The project aligns with the Macquarie Coal Complex Transformation Precinct planning involving Lake Macquarie City Council and Glencore.

The development is projected to support approximately 780 jobs during the construction phase and roughly 550 ongoing positions across the plant and associated supply chains. Premier Chris Minns noted the project would provide secure jobs and trade opportunities in the Hunter region, while Transport Minister John Graham highlighted the site's potential to become a significant industrial hub.
