Terence Atmane retires from Shanghai qualifying after racket outburst
French tennis player Terence Atmane has faced scrutiny following a series of outbursts and withdrawals during tournaments in China. During a qualifying match at the ATP Masters 1000 in Shanghai against Bernard Tomic, Atmane threw his racket toward the spectators after losing a service game in the third set. While the racket struck a railing and bounced back onto the court, no spectators were injured, and the chair umpire did not disqualify him.
Following the outburst, Atmane retired from the match while trailing 3-5 in the deciding set, allowing Tomic to advance to the second round of qualifying. This incident marks Atmane’s second consecutive withdrawal in a week, following an abandonment during a match against Elias Ymer at the Jingshan Challenger tournament.
