Terence Tao warns of AI impact on mathematical research

Beyond the scarcity of meaningful problems, concerns have been raised regarding intellectual property and transparency. Recent controversies involving OpenAI and the potential use of de-identified data to improve models have sparked discussions about whether researchers can trust AI companies with their intellectual property. Tao has advocated for better transparency and suggested that certain problems be labeled as ‘analysis-required’ to ensure that AI-generated answers are accompanied by meaningful, explained reasoning rather than just bare results.
