Teresa Jiménez-Becerril to serve as acting Spanish Ombudsman

Teresa Jiménez-Becerril, the first deputy to the Ombudsman, will serve as acting Ombudsman starting November 16. This transition follows the end of Ángel Gabilondo’s five-year term, occurring shortly before the general elections scheduled for November 29. Jiménez-Becerril, a former Member of the European Parliament and Member of the Spanish Congress for the People's Party, will hold the position until the Congress elects a successor.

In related political developments ahead of the general elections, discussions have emerged regarding Begoña Gómez, wife of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. Amidst ongoing legal proceedings involving allegations of influence peddling and embezzlement, there is speculation regarding her potential inclusion in the PSOE candidate lists. Such a move could grant her parliamentary immunity, which protects members of Congress and the Senate from prosecution except in cases of flagrante delicto.
