Terna begins underwater cable installation between Calabria and Sicily

Terna has commenced the installation of underwater cables for the ‘Bolano-Annunziata’ power line, a 380 kV alternating current connection between Calabria and Sicily. The project, managed in collaboration with Prysmian, utilizes the vessel Leonardo da Vinci to lay three 7.5 km cables at depths of up to 250 meters.

The infrastructure is designed to increase energy exchange capacity between the island and the mainland by up to 2,000 MW, facilitating better integration of renewable energy sources. This project introduces technological innovation to the National Transmission Grid through the use of 380 kV alternating current cables with XLPE (extruded cross-linked polyethylene) insulation.

During preparatory environmental monitoring conducted in coordination with the Superintendency, an ancient terracotta amphora dating from the 2nd to 1st century B.C. was discovered near Villa San Giovanni at a depth of 125 meters. The artifact has been recovered and entrusted to the relevant archaeological authorities.
