TERNA Energy advances €1 billion pumped-storage project in Imathia
TERNA Energy, a subsidiary of the Masdar group, is advancing a major pumped-storage hydroelectricity project in the Imathia region of northern Greece. The investment, which is expected to exceed €1 billion, aims to enhance energy storage capabilities to support the integration of renewable energy sources and ensure energy security.
The project, located in the municipality of Veria, consists of two integrated components: Vrochoneira I and Vrochoneira II. Vrochoneira I features a maximum injection power of 450 MW and an absorption power of 537 MW, while Vrochoneira II offers a maximum injection power of 345 MW and an absorption power of 360 MW. The development includes significant interconnection infrastructure, such as underground and overhead high-voltage lines.
The Vrochoneira project has been included in ENTSO-E’s Trans-European Ten-Year Development Plan (TYNDP), identifying it as a critical project for the European electricity system through 2040. The construction phase is estimated to create over 1,000 jobs, with approximately 100 positions expected during the operational phase.
