Terni Court clarifies motives in Spoleto murder case

The Court of Assize of Terni has released the motivations behind the 30-year prison sentence handed to Dmytro Shuryn for the murder and dismemberment of Bala Sagor, known as Obi, in Spoleto.

Judges ruled that the killing was not motivated by the desire to avoid repaying a 150-euro debt, which had led prosecutors to seek life imprisonment based on the aggravating factor of “futile motives.” Instead, the court determined that the murder occurred during a physical altercation that escalated from a dispute over the money.

The court noted that Shuryn, a cook and habitual gambler, was experiencing significant psychological stress and economic pressure from creditors at the time. While the judges rejected the notion that the crime was a result of cold-blooded or capricious cruelty, they maintained that the act was a “tragically disproportionate” escalation of violence during a confrontation. The defense has announced its intention to appeal.
