Terni hospital performs complex minimally invasive aortic aneurysm surgery
Surgeons at the Santa Maria Hospital in Terni have successfully performed a highly complex minimally invasive procedure to treat a thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm. The operation utilized a new Thoracoabdominal Multibranched Endoprosthesis, a next-generation stent-graft recently introduced to the European market from the United States.
This specialized prosthesis features specific branches that allow blood flow to remain directed toward vital organs while excluding the diseased portion of the aorta from the aneurysm. Unlike traditional endovascular prostheses, which may lack adequate anchoring points for complex pararenal or thoracoabdominal aneurysms, this technology allows for intervention through small vascular access points. This approach avoids the extensive chest and abdomen openings required by traditional surgery. Additionally, the device is available ‘off-the-shelf,’ meaning it does not require the production time associated with custom-made prostheses, allowing for more immediate medical response.
