Italy faces rising wild boar management challenges across multiple regions

Various regions in Italy are facing escalating challenges regarding wild boar populations, leading to agricultural damage, public safety concerns, and political friction.

In the Veneto region, authorities have approved a management plan for the 2026/2027 season covering approximately 17,500 to 180,000 hectares in areas like Monte Baldo and Lessinia. While Coldiretti Verona supports the measure to protect crops and vineyards, they are calling for a permanent, structured strategy rather than emergency-based interventions.

In Terni, Umbria, provincial officials have appealed to the Prefect for the release of 200,000 euros in regional funds. Vice President Francesco Maria Ferranti noted that current resources are insufficient to manage the increasing number of animals entering residential areas and causing damage.

In the Lazio region, a political dispute has emerged between the Regional government and Rome's Municipio XV regarding the management of wild boars and the containment of African Swine Fever. Regional Agriculture Councilor Giancarlo Righini defended the administration's efforts, citing the removal of hundreds of animals.

In Sardinia, agricultural groups like Confagricoltura are calling for immediate and structural culling programs in Nuoro to mitigate heavy economic losses caused by the invasive species.
