Terra dei Fuochi crackdown sees doubled inspections and near‑tripled seizures in Italy

In the first seven months of 2026, Italy’s crackdown on illegal waste dumping in the Terra dei Fuochi area more than doubled the number of inspections, rising from 372 to 756, and nearly tripled the seized sites, increasing from 178 to 425. Arrests jumped from four in the previous year to 52, reflecting a stronger deterrent effect.

Authorities reported the removal of over 10,000 tonnes of waste, equivalent to more than 14,000 cubic metres, and announced a forthcoming regulatory package in September backed by €200 million to fund comprehensive remediation and security of the contaminated zones. The statements were made by Deputy Prime Minister Alfredo Mantovano, Carabinieri General Giuseppe Vadalà, and Environment Vice‑Minister Vannia Gava.
