Terracap to expand Lago Norte leisure area with new urban park
The Brasília Development Agency (Terracap) has announced plans to expand the Parque Ecológico das Garças in Lago Norte by integrating an adjacent area into a new urban park. This decision follows community feedback gathered during a public hearing, where residents expressed concerns regarding an initial proposal that slated the land for commercial, gastronomic, and entertainment activities.
The adjacent land, which had been subject to irregular occupation for over 50 years, was reintegrated into Terracap's assets following the dissolution of that occupation. The new urban park will feature infrastructure for sports and leisure, including courts, playgrounds, and restrooms.
Terracap has formally proposed to the Brasília Environmental Institute (Ibram) to adopt the existing Parque Ecológico das Garças for a ten-year period. Under this proposal, Terracap will invest in maintenance, security, and infrastructure improvements while Ibram maintains public management and the site's status as a conservation unit.
