Terrace City Council approves partial benefits for elected officials

The City of Terrace has approved a new policy allowing council members to opt into the city’s benefits plan, provided they cover half of the costs. The measure will apply to the mayor and six councillors elected in the upcoming October municipal election.

The motion, which passed during an August 10 meeting, was moved by councillor Dave Gordon and seconded by councillor Sarah Zimmerman. The decision followed a study of five different options, ranging from the city covering full costs to councillors paying the entire amount themselves. The council ultimately selected the 50 per cent cost-sharing model.

Councillor Zimmerman originally proposed exploring benefits options, noting that existing provincial association requirements could act as an impediment for individuals running for office who lack existing coverage. The motion faced opposition from councillors Chris Apps and James Cordeiro, as well as Mayor Sean Bujtas.
