Terrace fire chief reports surge in arson incidents

Fire chief Joe Brousson said the Terrace fire department has seen a rise in deliberately set fires, describing the trend as a risk to residents, firefighters and property. Since January, officials have recorded 12 suspicious fires involving houses, other buildings, wooded areas, dumpsters, vehicles and both residential and commercial sites. The chief noted that lighters and gasoline are the primary ignition sources.

Brousson emphasized the importance of public vigilance, urging anyone who sees smoke, flames or suspicious activity to call 911 immediately. He cited a recent example on August 4, 2026, when a passerby’s 911 call enabled firefighters to quickly extinguish a fire set against a house on the 4400 Block of Greig Avenue. The fire department is collaborating with the RCMP to investigate each incident’s origin, cause and intent and to hold responsible parties accountable.
