Terranuova di Sicilia traffic light installation sparks local opposition

In Terranuova di Sicilia, the installation of a new intelligent traffic light at the Il Lupo intersection has drawn criticism from the opposition group Terranuova per Tutti. Local councilors argue that the device is causing long queues and significant traffic delays, particularly during the school reopening period.

The project, approved in 2023, involved an investment of approximately 800,000 euros, with roughly 548,000 euros allocated specifically to the works at the intersection of via Vittorio Veneto, via Gino Fabbri, and via F.lli Kennedy. The opposition has questioned why a roundabout was not implemented instead of a traffic light system.

According to the project's general report, officials opted against a roundabout because it was deemed potentially detrimental to the main traffic flow, less safe for pedestrians and cyclists, and poorly suited to the orthogonal urban fabric of the town center. The administration maintained that a roundabout would be more appropriate for an extra-urban context rather than the town's layout.
