Terre dell’Etruria seeks revision of Toscano IGP production limits

The Terre dell’Etruria cooperative is calling for a revision of the Toscano IGP production limits to prevent high-efficiency olive groves from harming farmer profitability. The central issue is the current regulation that caps production at 90 quintals of olives per hectare for the protected designation of origin.

With a particularly productive harvest season underway, many producers in the Val di Cornia region are facing a contradiction between modern agricultural advancements and existing rules. The cooperative notes that significant public and private investments have been made to modernize orchards, increase mechanization, and implement intensive or semi-intensive planting models to improve competitiveness.

Terre dell’Etruria argues that increased productivity resulting from these investments should not be treated as an anomaly or a violation of standards. The cooperative is proposing differentiated thresholds based on planting types and cultivated varieties, while maintaining strict controls to ensure the continued quality and protection of Tuscan olive oil.
