Terry Matalas expresses interest in returning to Star Trek
Terry Matalas, the showrunner for the third season of Star Trek: Picard, has expressed continued interest in developing a follow-up series for the franchise. While his previously pitched concept, titled Star Trek: Legacy, was not greenlit by Paramount due to budget constraints and existing development roadmaps, Matalas indicated that he remains open to returning to the franchise under new circumstances.
Matalas noted that while a direct continuation might change due to the passage of time, the core concept of bridging younger and older generations remains appealing. He is currently focused on developing VisionQuest for Disney+ after being recruited by Marvel Studios.
The Star Trek franchise is currently in a period of transition, with series such as Strange New Worlds and Starfleet Academy expected to conclude their runs by 2027. Paramount is reportedly exploring future directions for the franchise under new management.
