Terunobu Shinoyama wins partial lawsuit over unpaid consumption tax

Actor Terunobu Shinoyama has won a partial victory in a lawsuit against his former talent agency regarding unpaid performance fees. The Tokyo District Court ordered the former agency to pay Shinoyama approximately 2.06 million yen, representing the amount of consumption tax he had personally paid.

The dispute centered on whether the performance fees Shinoyama received—calculated as 60 percent of the total amount paid by broadcasters or production companies—were inclusive or exclusive of consumption tax. The implementation of Japan’s invoice system in October 2023 played a critical role, as it required clearer documentation of tax amounts in transactions, bringing the previously opaque handling of tax within his compensation to light.

While the former agency has expressed its intent to appeal the ruling, the case highlights a growing need for transparency in contracts between talent agencies and individual contractors in the entertainment industry. Shinoyama, who now works as a freelancer, stated he hopes the case contributes to a more stable and transparent industry for performers.
