Tesco considers acquisition of Majestic Wine Group

Tesco has emerged as a potential bidder in the open auction for Majestic Wine Group, which is being sold by its owner, Fortress Investment Group. While no definitive agreement or valuation has been made public, the acquisition could significantly expand Tesco's footprint in the UK wine and hospitality markets.

Majestic Wine Group comprises several business units, including a retail chain with over 200 stores, the hospitality supplier Majestic Commercial, the high-end distributor Enotria, and the wine bar operator Vagabond. Analysts suggest Tesco could facilitate the deal through its wholesale subsidiary, Booker, to strengthen its presence in supplying restaurants, hotels, and bars.

The move comes as the global wine market faces a downturn in consumption and rising inventories, creating opportunities for large-scale retailers. Unlike discount competitors Aldi and Lidl, which have streamlined their wine selections, Tesco has been expanding its premium and recognized producer offerings.
