Tesco may exit Central Europe, potentially opening Czech market to Biedronka
Speculation is growing regarding significant changes in the Czech retail market as the British supermarket chain Tesco reportedly considers withdrawing from Central Europe to focus on its domestic market.
Analysts suggest that if Tesco exits, it would leave a large portfolio of hundreds of stores in the Czech Republic and Slovakia available for acquisition. The Polish discount retailer Biedronka, owned by Jerónimo Martins, is identified as a likely candidate to fill this gap. Biedronka has already expanded into the Slovak market and maintains a presence in the region through its Hebe drugstore chain, making a move into the Czech Republic a strategic possibility.
