Tesco school nutrition programme reaches 186,000 pupils across UK
Tesco’s ‘Free Fruit & Veg for Schools’ programme, developed in partnership with the British Nutrition Foundation, has provided nearly 20 million portions of fresh produce to approximately 186,000 students during its first two years.
In Essex, the scheme served over 170,785 portions, while schools in Aberdeen received more than 29,000 portions. Apples were identified as the most popular choice in both regions, followed by bananas and satsumas.
A recent impact report indicates nutritional improvements among participating children, including an average 4.2% increase in Vitamin C intake, a 1.7% boost in Vitamin A, and increases in fibre and folate levels. Additionally, 94% of teachers reported improved student behaviour, noting sharper focus and increased energy in the classroom. The programme has now expanded to support over 1,000 schools in its third year.
