Turkey fuel price hikes strain small businesses and farmers
Rising fuel prices in Turkey are creating significant economic pressure on small businesses, transport workers, and the agricultural sector. Bendevi Palandöken, President of the Confederation of Turkish Tradesmen and Craftsmen (TESK), has called for the re-implementation of the ‘Eşel Mobil’ system to prevent fuel price hikes from being fully passed on to consumers and businesses. He warned that current increases are fueling inflation and disproportionately affecting taxi, minibus, and truck drivers.
In the agricultural sector, Prof. Dr. Mevlüt Mülayim noted that despite record yields in some areas, farmers are struggling due to soaring input costs, particularly diesel. This economic strain is driving small family farms out of business and accelerating rural-to-urban migration.
Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar attributed global fuel volatility to supply issues in the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb strait, as well as the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war affecting diesel supplies. He noted that resolving these geopolitical tensions is key to stabilizing prices.
