Tesla advances Optimus robot design and Robotaxi strategy
Tesla is advancing its robotics and autonomous driving programs, according to findings from JPMorgan analysts following a visit to the Fremont factory. The company has finalized the design for the third generation of its Optimus humanoid robot and has already installed production lines. While manufacturing is expected to begin soon, commercial availability for external customers is projected for 2027.
Tesla has established production capacities in Fremont capable of producing up to 1 million Optimus units annually, with long-term goals of 10 million units at its Texas site. Despite this, technical challenges with robot hands led the company to lower its 2025 production target from 5,000 to approximately 2,000 units. Current version 2.5 prototypes are being used for internal tasks such as battery inspection and sorting.
Regarding autonomous transport, Tesla is intentionally limiting the integration of Model Y vehicles into its Robotaxi fleet. This decision stems from management's confidence in the near-term scalability of the purpose-built Cybercab. Additionally, Tesla views the upcoming FSD V15 software release as a significant performance leap, with approximately 40% of its core technologies currently undergoing testing within the robotaxi fleet.
