Tesla aims to ship Optimus humanoid robots to customers by 2027
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has stated that the company aims to begin shipping its Optimus humanoid robots to commercial customers by 2027. The project, which began with a concept in 2021, is designed to perform tasks that are unsafe, repetitive, or boring for humans.
Tesla is currently scaling production, with reports indicating the company has ordered enough components to build approximately 15,000 units in 2026. Production targets include reaching roughly 1,000 units per week by the end of September, potentially scaling to 2,500 units per week by the end of the year. Musk has suggested that at scale, the robots could cost between $20,000 and $30,000 per unit.
While Musk believes Tesla could produce up to one million units in 2027, analysts provide more conservative estimates, suggesting deliveries of between 100,000 and 500,000 units, primarily for use in Tesla’s own factories and pilot programs. If Tesla were to sell 500,000 units at $30,000 each, it would generate $15 billion in revenue, though this would represent only about 12% of the company's projected 2027 revenue.
