Tesla and Alef Aeronautics compete in flying car market

Tesla has unveiled a new Roadster model featuring flight capabilities powered by SpaceX cooling gas thruster technology. The upcoming lineup includes Performance, Thrust, and Rocket versions, with only the Rocket model designed to lift off the ground using high-pressure gas propulsion. While Tesla aims for production by 2028, specific details regarding flight altitude, duration, and pricing remain undisclosed. Some experts, including AI scientist Yann LeCun, have questioned the practical utility of the demonstration, suggesting it may serve more as a marketing event than a viable transportation solution.

In response, California-based startup Alef Aeronautics released footage of its Model Zero Ultralight flying over existing Tesla vehicles to showcase its own technology. Unlike Tesla’s thruster-based approach, Alef utilizes Distributed Electric Propulsion (DEP) for vertical takeoff and landing, with the vehicle body acting as a wing during flight. Alef claims to have been operating in this market for 11 years and holds special FAA certification for research and development. Both companies face significant hurdles regarding safety regulations, road legality, and pilot certification before flying cars can reach mass commercialization.
