Nvidia and Tesla invest in Samsung Electro-Mechanics amid AI infrastructure bottlenecks

Tesla and Nvidia are reportedly investing approximately 2.5 billion euros (3.7 trillion won) into Samsung Electro-Mechanics to expand production capacity for specialized substrates used in high-performance AI chips. This move aims to address growing supply chain bottlenecks for artificial intelligence components.

As part of this expansion, Tesla has entered a long-term supply agreement with Samsung Electro-Mechanics running from 2029 to 2033. Tesla is also investing 1.1 trillion won to expand a production line in Sejong, South Korea, to secure components for its autonomous vehicles and the Optimus humanoid robot.

Simultaneously, the AI sector faces significant infrastructure challenges. Amazon Web Services (AWS) is reportedly storing billions of dollars worth of Nvidia AI server racks in warehouses because its data centers lack the necessary electrical capacity to operate them. This phenomenon, often referred to as 'dark GPUs,' highlights a critical mismatch between the rapid acquisition of hardware and the slower deployment of power infrastructure.
