Tesla and SpaceX to operate Terafab chip complex as GlobalFoundries secures TSMC deal

Elon Musk has clarified that his companies, Tesla and SpaceX, will build and operate the Terafab chip manufacturing complex in Texas, rather than having TSMC run the facility. The project, which involves Intel as a technology partner, is expected to require an initial investment of over $15 billion. Musk aims to integrate design, fabrication, testing, and advanced packaging in a single location to produce AI chips that outperform current market leaders in both performance and cost.

Separately, GlobalFoundries has entered into a $2 billion, five-year agreement with TSMC to supply silicon interposers. This production will take place at GlobalFoundries' facility in Malta, New York, making it the first site in the United States to provide these critical components for advanced AI packaging. Mass production of these interposers is slated to begin in the first half of 2028, helping to diversify the supply chain for AI semiconductor manufacturing.
