Tesla and Toyota advance distinct electric vehicle strategies
Major automakers are pursuing different electrification strategies. Tesla is expected to report third-quarter auto deliveries and production statistics on October 2. While Wall Street estimates vary, with Barclays projecting 475,000 deliveries and Goldman Sachs estimating 435,000, investors are closely watching for growth in the company’s “Other Models” category, which includes the Cybercab and the Semi truck.
Meanwhile, Toyota is reportedly planning to enter the extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) market. According to a Nikkei report, Toyota aims to begin EREV production in April 2027, targeting the Chinese market. These vehicles use an internal combustion engine solely as a generator to charge the battery rather than powering the wheels. Toyota reportedly intends to produce 200,000 EREVs in 2027, increasing that figure to 400,000 by 2028.
