Tesla launches Cybercab robotaxi service in Austin

Tesla has launched its Cybercab robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, offering rides through a dedicated app. The two-seater vehicle is designed without a steering wheel or pedals, relying entirely on a camera-based AI4 hardware system rather than lidar or radar. While Tesla has begun commercial deployment, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened an audit to investigate the company's self-certification of the vehicle's compliance with federal safety standards.

The rollout faces both technical and operational scrutiny. In Austin, the Austin Fire Department reported 47 incidents between April and June 2026 where autonomous vehicles hindered emergency responders. Additionally, social media trends have highlighted vulnerabilities in the vehicle's programming, where pedestrians can intentionally trigger emergency braking to stop the car.

In the broader market, Tesla's camera-only approach contrasts with competitors like Alphabet-owned Waymo, which utilizes lidar and currently operates approximately 4,000 robotaxis performing 500,000 weekly trips. Meanwhile, Uber and Wayve have introduced a small-scale autonomous taxi service in London using Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles, though these currently require a safety driver behind the wheel.
