Autonomous vehicle industry sees Tesla Cybercab launch and new robotaxi partnerships
The autonomous vehicle industry is seeing significant developments across global markets. Tesla has showcased its Cybercab robotaxi in Tokyo, highlighting a vision-only approach that uses eight cameras and AI instead of LiDAR. However, the company faces scrutiny following a Cybercab presentation in Austin that lacked Elon Musk's presence, leading to investor uncertainty and an NHTSA audit inquiry regarding the self-certification of approximately 1,000 vehicles.
In a separate collaborative effort, Lucid, Uber, and Nuro have announced plans to deploy over 35,000 robotaxis worldwide within six years. This fleet will be based on the Lucid Gravity electric SUV and utilizes a comprehensive sensor suite including high-resolution cameras, solid-state LiDAR, and radar.
Technological advancements in power electronics were also highlighted in Japan. A project led by Nagoya University successfully unveiled the ‘Feather Inverter,’ a component that is 70% lighter and smaller than the Tesla Cybertruck inverter, weighing only about 300g while maintaining comparable performance through advanced semiconductor integration.
