Tesla builds first Cybercab using in-house cathode material
Tesla has completed the first Cybercab vehicle utilizing cathode material produced at its own manufacturing facility in the Americas. The cathode plant, located at Gigafactory Texas, is the first large-scale production site of its kind in North America.
This milestone is part of Tesla’s long-term vertical integration strategy to control battery supply chains and reduce costs. Cathode material is a critical and expensive component, often representing more than 35% of total battery cell costs. By producing this material in-house, Tesla aims to improve the economics of its autonomous robotaxi fleet.
The Texas facility has been operational since August 2026, processing precursors like nickel, manganese, and cobalt with lithium hydroxide. The plant supports the production of 4680 cells, which are intended for the Cybercab, Model Y, and Tesla Semi. Tesla is also employing a dry electrode process for these cells, a technology expected to significantly lower production costs.
