Tesla caps employee AI tool spending at $200 per week
Tesla announced that, beginning July 6, staff may spend no more than $200 each week on AI services such as OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI and Cursor. Any amount above the limit requires manager approval. The restriction does not apply to beta products from Musk’s xAI, including the Grok model.
The policy follows reports that some software engineers were burning through AI tokens worth several thousand dollars weekly. Tesla has built an internal AI dashboard that tracks token consumption and ranks employees, aiming to encourage efficient use. The company’s central AI platform, called Bottle Rocket, consolidates access to multiple large‑language models for all divisions. While Musk pushes staff toward using Grok and the coding tool Cursor, many employees still favor Anthropic’s Claude.
The spending cap forms part of broader AI governance measures introduced this spring, which also tighten data‑security rules and limit access to unauthorized models. Tesla’s larger capital budget for 2026 was recently raised to over $250 billion, underscoring the firm’s continued emphasis on AI, autonomous driving, Robotaxi and the Optimus humanoid robot despite the new cost controls.
